July 1940. A young soldier, lately returned from Dunkirk, languishes in a London police station, charged with murdering his former CO in horrific circumstances in broad daylight on a main thoroughfare; witnesses describe the attack as savage and sickening. The young man is clearly deranged, muttering dark warnings and claiming his actions were necessary to protect the world. Such a crime was unlikely to evade the attentions of N for long so he despatches a team to investigate whether the crime has a link to the occult.
