Hot Rails to Perdition

The onward march of the Iron Horse seems inexorable, with the ultimate dream of a route from coast to coast turning fast into reality. The Western Pioneer Railroad Company and the Pegasus Steamco have raced, neck and neck, across the country but now the WPRC have the advantage; labour disputes, disasters and bad management have caused the PSC to fall behind. The biggest natural obstacle yet looms before the WPRC; the Harpies, a range of mountains that must be crossed by the rail companies, bypassing is not an option. Representatives of the WPRC including their finest engineer, Horatio Baldwin, armed with money and government land grants, have crossed the range and travelled to Perdition, the town in the western foothills of the Harpies, intent on securing the land to make the crossing a reality. They also carry the promise that with the arrival of the railroad will come the status of gateway to the west for Perdition and an influx of travellers, business and money.

That party has failed to contact the WPRC, however, and Ephraim MacCurdy, grizzled chief of the company, has assembled his favourite troubleshooters to investigate the whys, wherefores and what nows.
