The Daimyo of the minor house Ashida lies dead. Poison is suspected but the young heir, Ashida Eriko, must journey at once to renew fealty to the Asakura family – those who rule over all the lands of south-eastern Lannet.
Eriko selects only those few she can trust, not knowing what dangers she leaves behind. Before assuming her title she had always been forbidden to venture into the lands controlled by the Asakura family, who are known to influence the shadows and are said to know every secret within the Lanneten Empire.
