The Mandate of Heaven

“Up in the Western Heaven, a city of Jade and jeweled encrusted buildings home to China’s Celestial Immortals that hangs in the clouds above Mount Kunlun, the Queen Mother of the West is worried. The Head Gardener of her Peach Garden has gone missing along with a consignment of ripe peaches that were to be given to worthy individuals to grant them Immortality at a small ceremony and party that only happens every 1000 years. Through the Ministries of Heaven she contacts Immortal representatives on Earth. Reports are inconclusive, and some are patchy if not downright fraudulent. Someone or something is deliberately upsetting the divine Mandate of Heaven which ensures harmony in the Universe. She summons investigators from the Ministry of Thunder, while on Earth the City God of Chang’an the Chinese Capital summons a similar group of Earth Bound Immortals, while in Hell, King Yama summons the legendary Demon Hunters to his court. All three agencies are determined to get to the bottom of this and deal with the miscreants involved.”

This epic adventure takes place in three locations within Chinese Mythology: the Western Heaven, Chang‘an (capital of the Tang Empire) and the Ten Courts of Hell. There, numerous plots play out and evil demons try to bring about the downfall of Heaven and Earth by usurping the Mandate of Heaven, the sacred harmony that exists between them. Of course this being Monkey this is all very light hearted with moments of intense action. It’s the most epic Monkey experience produced for the game and I’ll be running it with three tables of five players and two co-Narrators who will each run one of the tables while I run the other.

This game is beginner friendly. No knowledge of Chinese mythology required, it will all be gently introduced and discovered during play. Monkey uses an easy to understand rules system that uses playing cards.

Oh and half way through there will be an Intermission where both tables will come together and enjoy a banquet of Chinese snacks!

What do you think about that?
