Poland AD 981; 15 years since Duke Mieszko’s baptism into the Catholic faith have seen the gradual spread of Christianity throughout the land. Pockets of Paganism remain everywhere – what Bishop Wojciech of Poznan calls the “shadow stain” upon the land. The Bishop orders that the village of Zielonka, long rumoured to be a hotbed of pagan rites, be offered the opportunity to come under the rule of faith or be considered Apostate and treated accordingly. The responsibility for accomplishing this task is placed upon the Vicar General of Gniezno. Unbeknownst to the Bishop, the Vicar General, seeking recognition, approval and advancement, has already despatched an emissary to Zielonka who has failed to return. Looking to repair the situation he finds himself in, the Vicar General prepares a second expedition into the Zielonka forest, deep into the dark heart of paganism.
